What is Jember Fashion Carnaval?

Jember is a quiet town of tobacco and coffee plantations in East Java, far from Indonesia's usual tourist routes. Once a year, it stages one of the most extravagant costume parades in Asia. For the Jember Fashion Carnaval, known simply as JFC, thousands of local performers in towering, handmade costumes walk a catwalk 3.6 kilometres long through the middle of town, watched by crowds packed along the route.

It began with one person. Dynand Fariz, a local fashion designer and teacher, held a fashion week in his home town in 2001, with costumes inspired by fashions from around the world, and the following years it moved onto the streets. The first full carnival was held on January 1, 2003, Jember's founding day, and it later settled into the summer. Its participants, mostly young volunteers from the area, rehearse and build their costumes for months beforehand, and the carnival has become the thing Jember is known for across Indonesia.

The costumes are the point. Each edition has a theme, divided into sections, or defiles, each with its own designs, from phoenixes and dragons to the motifs of Indonesian regions and the natural world. Many draw on traditional performance costumes such as the giant headdresses of East Java's Reog Ponorogo. The 2026 theme was HEAL, Humanity, Earth and Life, with more than 2,500 performers.

What to expect

The carnival runs over a weekend, building to the Grand Carnival on the final day.

Day 1

Kids and artwear

Children from local schools parade in their own costumes in the Kids Carnival, and the first artwear shows display individual pieces on the stage. It is the most relaxed day to watch.

Day 2

The archipelago

Groups from across Indonesia show costumes inspired by their regions in a parade celebrating the country's diversity of dress and culture.

Day 3

The Grand Carnival

The main event. The full parade, section by section, makes its way along the 3.6-kilometre route, each performer pausing to pose and dance before the crowds and the cameras. It takes hours to pass.

Planning your trip

Getting there

Jember has a small airport with flights from Jakarta and other cities, but most visitors come overland. Trains from Surabaya, East Java's capital, take around four to five hours, and from Banyuwangi, the jumping-off point for Bali, about two to three. In town, the parade route runs through the centre and is easy to reach on foot.

Where to stay

Jember has a modest selection of hotels, which fill for the carnival weekend, so book early. Many visitors combine the carnival with East Java's volcanoes, staying in Banyuwangi before or after for the Ijen crater, or in the Bromo area to the west.

What it costs

Watching from the street is free. Seats in the grandstands along the route are sold at modest prices and give a much better view, especially near the start. Jember is inexpensive, and food from local warungs costs very little.

Go like you know

  • Ask before taking close-up photos of performers; most are glad to pose, but the parade has to keep moving.
  • Try suwar-suwir, Jember's sweet made from fermented cassava, sold all over town.
  • Look out for the smaller details on each costume; many take months to make by hand, from beadwork and sequins to wings built on light frames.
  • Arrive a day or two early. The town fills with performers rehearsing and visitors from across Java, and the evenings before the parade have a festival feel of their own.
  • Brazil's Rio Carnival is the most famous costume parade in the world, and JFC owes it some of its style.
  • In Central Java, the Dieng Culture Festival is a quieter mountain festival of lanterns and tradition.

Frequently asked questions

When is Jember Fashion Carnaval?

Each summer, usually over a weekend in July or August, with the Grand Carnival on the final day. The 2026 edition ran from July 24 to 26. The organizers announce the dates and the year's theme in the spring, so check before booking travel.

Is it a religious festival?

No. Despite the name, the carnival has no link to the Christian pre-Lenten carnival or to any religious celebration. It is a fashion and cultural event, created to celebrate design, creativity and Indonesian traditions, and it has become a source of pride for the town.

Can visitors take part?

The parade itself is made up of trained participants who have prepared for months, so visitors watch rather than join. Many performers are happy to talk about their costumes after the parade, and a few days in Jember before the carnival let you see the town getting ready.
