About Matsuri Travel

Travel where the locals are celebrating.

Arriving in a city mid-festival changes what kind of traveler you get to be. The streets belong to the people who live there, doing the thing they’ve done for generations, and for a night or a week, you’re inside it with them. You feel like one of them, not just a passing-by tourist. Even if you are one.

Matsuri Travel exists to make that feeling plannable. Most travel starts with a place; ours starts with a window (the dates you actually have) and answers what the world is celebrating then. Search by your travel window, narrow by region, kind of festival, destination style, and budget, and read guides that tell you honestly what to expect: the magic, the crowds, the booking lead times, the estimated lunar dates that shift every year.

Matsuri(祭り) is Japanese for festival: the neighborhood kind, with portable shrines and drum circles and everyone’s grandmother dancing in the street. That’s the spirit we’re built around: traditional, recurring celebrations, the ones you can miss this year and still catch the next. No FOMO. The calendar is a wheel, not a queue.

What we care about

  • Dates you can trust.Every festival carries per-year dates with a confidence flag. When a lunar calendar means we’re estimating, we say so on the page.
  • The local feeling. We favor celebrations locals throw for themselves, and we tell you when something is a show staged for visitors.
  • Honest practicality. Budget levels, crowd warnings, and book-by dates are core information, not fine print.

Start with the explore page, browse the full catalog, or read our field notes. And if you know a festival we should cover, we want to hear about it.
