What is Fuji Rock Festival?

Despite its name, Fuji Rock is nowhere near Mount Fuji. The first edition, in 1997, was held at a ski resort at the foot of the mountain, but a typhoon hit on the first day and the second was cancelled. After a year on Tokyo's waterfront, the festival found its home in 1999 at Naeba Ski Resort, in the mountains of Niigata prefecture, where it has stayed ever since. The name stuck.

Today it is Japan's largest outdoor music festival, held over three days in late July and organized by the promoter Smash. Well over 100,000 people come each year, and the line-ups mix international headliners with Japanese bands and a wide spread of genres, from rock and electronic music to folk, jazz and world music. What sets it apart, though, is the setting.

The festival is spread through a mountain valley. Its stages are linked by long trails through forests and over streams, from the Green Stage, the main stage in the valley with room for almost 50,000, to the White Stage, the Red Marquee and the Field of Heaven, a small stage deep in the woods known for its relaxed, hippie spirit. Above the site, the Dragondola, described as the world's longest gondola, carries visitors up the mountain to a quiet world of art and views.

Fuji Rock is also famous for its manners. Its stated aim is to be "the cleanest festival in the world", and visitors sort their rubbish, carry their own bags and leave the mountain as they found it. Many bring children, camp for the weekend and return year after year.

What to expect

The festival runs Friday to Sunday, with a free pre-party and camping opening the day before.

Thursday

The eve

The campsite opens and early arrivals gather for a free eve party near the entrance, with music, food stalls and fireworks.

Friday to Sunday

The festival

Music runs from late morning until late at night across the stages. Days are spent walking between stages through the forest, eating at the food areas and resting on the grass.

Late nights

After hours

Once the main stages close, late-night areas keep the music going for those with energy left, while campers head back to their tents on the slopes.

Planning your trip

Getting there

Take the Joetsu shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa, about 80 minutes, then a shuttle bus to Naeba, about 40 minutes. Festival buses also run directly from Tokyo. Driving is possible, but parking must be booked in advance, and the mountain roads get congested.

Where to stay

Camping at the festival's campsite, on the slopes beside the site, is the classic option, and about 17,000 people camp each year. Hotels at Naeba and inns in nearby towns such as Yuzawa sell out months ahead; many are sold through festival packages.

What it costs

Fuji Rock is expensive. Three-day passes cost tens of thousands of yen, and camping, parking and the Dragondola are extra. Food and drink on site are reasonably priced for a festival, but accommodation nearby is scarce and costly, so camping is the best value.

Go like you know

  • Ride the Dragondola at least once for the views over the mountains.
  • Carry a portable ashtray if you smoke, and take your rubbish to the sorting stations; the festival's cleanliness is a matter of pride.
  • Spend a slow afternoon at the Field of Heaven, deep in the woods.
  • Bring cash and a refillable bottle; queues at the food areas are long at peak times, and water points are spread around the site.
  • For another great festival in Niigata, see the Nagaoka Fireworks, in early August.
  • Britain's Glastonbury Festival, in June, is Europe's equivalent of a mountain of music and mud.
